How To Maintain Gut Health With VSL#3 Plus A Smoothie Recipe
This winter has been bad: I was ill for about 7-8 weeks with flu and ended up at the A&E with chest pain, x-ray and antibiotics twice. I wasn’t looking after myself properly and in December I did work a lot – like a lot of other people, just before Christmas.
So we do various things to avoid this as much as possible like taking vitamins, trying to eat healthy and exercise – but we do this anyway, still, these sicknesses crack the immune system at some point and we’re ill again. Which is not a parade in general, but when you’re sick and have to look after your family, that’s even worse.
But as part of my new year resolution – I’m now doing more for my health. I do yoga more often, taking vitamins and although I’m a vegetarian, I eat a lot of vegan food these days.
And I take care of my gut health in particular. Looking after your gut is important and there are a number of simple ways to go about this. Drinking lots of water and having a balanced diet packed full of fresh fruit and vegetables is key and lays the foundations for a healthy lifestyle going forwards. As the old adage goes, you are what you eat and this has never been more true when it comes to nurturing your microbiome.
Also known as ‘gut flora’, your microbiome is made up of trillions of microorganisms found in the intestine. These microorganisms help absorb nutrients from the food you eat and provide you with the energy you need for your day. In short, your gut microbiome has a huge impact on day to day health. Lifestyle choices that take supporting your microbiome into consideration can be beneficial on a number of levels, not least in supporting a healthy digestive system.
